New Zealand Kennel Club Museum Trust

Museum Musings

This is the first of hopefully many monthly updates on what is happening in the Museum upstairs at the NZKC Building at Porirua. We have been slowly working on the displays upstairs and for those of you coming down to the Wellington based shows in June and August please come and visit us to see the fruits of our labour.

We are a small band of five Trustees now as a long time Trustee and Treasurer Elaine Ingram has stepped down. Thank you Elaine for all your work in supporting the Museum. Also in last three years our other long term Trustees Jan Chaplin, Martin Trent, Martin Hewitt and Rosemary Cleator have also stepped down again we thank you for your support. This means that we are looking for a Trustee to join us, you don’t have to be in Wellington and we do most things by email or concall. Please email me if you would like to join us we would welcome you with open arms.

The current Trustees are
Chairperson - Bernard Fears
Secretary - Samantha Diggins
Treasurer - Lauren V D James
Trustees - Sonya Sloan and Brian Townsend

Recently we have had some wonderful objects join the Museum and we are in the process of adding these to the Collection.

These include New Zealand Dog Worlds from the 1950s and 60s and 8mm films from Gary Doyle, Chihuahua Club Ribbons, dog club spoons from the estate of Mrs. Jean Waldron, Cups, Trophies, photographs and books from The Beagle Club, Cups and Trophies from The Boston Terrier Club, two large Scottish Terrier ornaments and a book from Anna Youmans, some books to add to the Museum collection, a West Highland White Terrier Trophy and most recently Ribbons, certificates and photographs from Kathleen Stokes's estate.

We consider it a great privilege when people consider donating objects to the Museum. We are always happy to take any dog related items to add to our collection either on long term or permanent loan. In the last year we have added two new glass display cabinets which we are trialing with the intention of purchasing more either through donations or funding. One of these was donated by the Wellington Show training group who meets each Wednesday evening at Porirua. Thank you so much.

As some of you know there was a NZKC Library based in the Boardroom this is now upstairs in a new room attached to the Museum. It is my intention to catalogue this and attach it online to the NZKC website so that you can visit it and use it as a Reference Library. The Executive has allocated a small annual allowance to allow an upgrade of the books. I will let you know more about this at a later date. The Executive has also allocated moneys to help maintain and to help dust proof and limit the light into the Museum. The alarm system has also been recently moved to cover the Library area. The NZKC is also in the process of doing an audit of the original leather bound Stud Books with the intention of slowly refurbishing them.

Again than you so much for those people who have kindly given us what I consider dog related treasure and if you have anything you wish to lend or donate to The Museum please feel free to email me and we can go from there. Look forward to seeing you upstairs in the Museum sometime soon.
